Can You Mix Chalk Paint with Latex Paint?

There may be a time when you want to change the color or consistency of your chalk paint. There are a few different ways you can go about changing the color of your paint, but the most popular is tinting, and mixing it with other types of paint.

So, can you mix chalk paint with latex paint? Yes you can. This is a great way to change both the consistency and the color of the paint. You will need to be careful with how much latex you add to the chalk paint because you can easily lose the chalk finish. You can also mix chalk paint with regular paint, and even acrylic!

Mixing paints together is fun and can be a great way to make a color that is unique and individual to you. It can be tricky to determine what kind of paint is best to use with chalk paint to keep the consistency as normal as possible. In this article we go over everything you need to know for mixing chalk paint with latex paint, acrylics, and regular paint. Let’s get to it!

How to Mix Chalk Paint with Latex Paint

Now that you know you can mix chalk paint with latex paint, you’re probably wondering what the best way to do so is. The process is pretty easy, but you will need to be incredibly careful. You don’t want to add too much latex paint to the chalk paint or you risk changing the consistency completely.

I like to use Rust-Oleum Chalk Paint for all my chalk paint projects. The quality is amazing, and there’s tons of colors to choose from!

First, you will want to start with your chalk paint. Pour some onto a palette or into a bowl if you need more of the color. You can choose any color chalk paint, but you will get the best results if you use a lighter color.

Next, choose the latex paint you want to use. You are going to want to add as little latex paint as you possibly can. Start by adding a drop or two at a time, mixing the paint thoroughly after each addition. This will give you a better idea of how close you are to the color you want and prevent adding too much latex paint.

Rust-Oleum also has a great selection of Latex Paint to choose from. It’s a good idea to mix the same brand together for better consistency results.

It is going to be much easier to add more latex paint to the mixture than it will be to take the latex paint back out. This means it is incredibly important to control how much of the latex paint you are adding into the chalk paint mixture.

Can Chalk Paint Be Mixed with Regular Paint?

As long as the regular paint you are referring to is water-based, you shouldn’t have any problems mixing the two together. Since chalk paint is water-based, it will be fine to mix it with other regular paints, such as acrylics and other matte paints.

However, you will not be able to mix chalk paint with oil-based paints because they will repel each other, and you won’t be able to use the paint. It is important that you make sure the paint is water-based before adding any of it in to the chalk paint.

The same rules apply for other types of paint as it does with latex paint. Add as little of the paint as possible to the chalk paint to avoid diluting the paint too much and impacting the consistency completely.

Can You Use Satin Latex Paint to Make Chalk Paint?

If you are wanting to make your own chalk paint, you easily can with just a few different items. The best part is you can make chalk paint with any type of latex paint, including satin finish. In addition to the paint, you will also need Plaster of Paris to create the proper consistency of the chalk paint.

The first thing you will do is mix the Plaster of Paris with water based on the instructions and how much you are using. Mix until the plaster turns into a paste. Next, you will pour some paint into the mixture. Continue to mix the paint until it is all blended together, and the color is consistent.

In addition to using Plaster of Paris, you can also make chalk paint with satin latex paint, Calcium Carbonate, and Talc. For this process, you will add the paint to the mixture first. It is recommended to add about one cup of paint, but you can add more or less depending on how much you need.

If you use one cup of paint, you will then add in four tablespoons of the Calcium Carbonate. You will then add one tablespoon of the talc. It should have no scent and be free from any additives. You are also going to want to add a little bit of water. One tablespoon should be fine, but you can add more or less if you need.

You will then want to mix the paint. Some recommend using an old blender for this process, but you can mix it by hand as well. Check the consistency of the paint after it’s mixed and add more water if you think it is too thick.

What Paints Can You Mix with Chalk Paint?

There are many different paints that you can effectively mix with chalk paint. First, you can mix other chalk paint with it. This will prevent any changes in the consistency of the chalk paint, and you can add as much or as little of the other color as you want. This will be the easiest way to mix a new color of chalk paint.

You can also mix acrylic paint with chalk paint. Using acrylic paint will give you the same outcome as latex paint. Make sure you are adding as little paint at a time as possible and only add as much paint that you absolutely need to the mixture. This will prevent any dramatic changes in consistency that can impact the final outcome of the paint.

My favorite and top pick is always Arteza Acrylic Paints. They have so many different colors, and the quality is amazing! I usually use Arteza Paints for all my projects.

Tempera craft paint is another option to mix with chalk paint. This is the paint that you will commonly see kids use in a classroom for art projects. Just like the latex and acrylic, be very careful with how much you are adding to the mixture to prevent overtaking the chalk consistency.

No matter what kind of paint you are using, you are going to want to mix completely every time you add more paint in. This will let you know what the color and consistency of the paint is like after each addition, preventing you from adding in too much. If you add too much, you will be left with a glossy finish instead of the matte, chalky finish.

Final Thoughts

If you want to change the color of your chalk paint, there are a couple different ways you can do it. You can use other chalk paint, or you can use another water-based paint such as latex and acrylic. Mixing your own paint color can help you achieve your vision and make the perfect color for your project.

However, if you are going to mix latex paint with your chalk paint, you will need to do so carefully. Add just a little paint at a time and mix after each addition. This will help ensure that you don’t add too much and lose the chalky consistency.  You can also mix your own chalk paint with latex paint of any finish, including satin. You will need some other ingredients as well, but the process is pretty simple and you will be happy with the outcome.
