Is Krylon Clear Glaze Waterproof?

Krylon Clear Glaze is an easy spray sealer for paintings and other artwork. It provides a topcoat that is resistant to smudging and fingerprints while protecting your art from fading over time. It is known for keeping your artwork bright and vibrant from the moment you finish.

Krylon Clear Glaze is an acrylic-based coating. This means it will be durable, shiny, and quick drying, but water based. Since most acrylic products are water-resistant when dry, does that mean you can use acrylic sealer to waterproof your paintings?

So, is Krylon clear glaze waterproof? Unfortunately, Krylon Clear Glaze is not known to be waterproof, but it is water-resistant. It’s best used for pieces of art that won’t typically be in contact with water. Since it’s water-resistant, it can withstand normal moisture. This means if some condensation were to collect on your art, it won’t be likely to cause damage.

Is Triple Thick Glaze Waterproof?

Krylon Triple Thick Glaze is an extra thick version of their Crystal Glaze. One coat of Triple Thick is equivalent to three coats of a regular glaze. Unfortunately, even though it is a thick formula, it still isn’t waterproof. It is moisture resistant, but that is the extent of water protection.

Since this product is moisture resistant, it won’t likely experience any damage if it comes in contact with condensation. This means you can put it in your bathroom, away from the shower and sink, and not experience any negative effects of the painting or the Glaze.

Can Krylon Clear Glaze Be Used Outdoors?

Krylon Clear Glaze is recommended for interior use only. It is not weather-resistant and is susceptible to peeling and cracking when exposed to weather conditions that aren’t ideal. This can be rain, sun, heat, and snow. You might also experience some damage from extreme winds, but this is less common.

Krylon Clear Glaze can be used on a wide variety of surfaces, which can make it tempting to use on products that are going to be used outside. If you want something that will stand up to weather conditions, I recommend using this Mod Podge Outdoor Sealer.

Krylon glaze will only remain permanent if you keep the artwork away from water. This isn’t possible for products that are outdoors. Rain can quickly damage your painting and the sealant, leading to frustration and an annoying situation.

Mod Podge is specifically designed to combat outdoor weather, and will protect your acrylic painted surface from dirt, water and even flaking.

How to Seal Acrylic Paint with Krylon Clear Spray

Sealing an acrylic painting with Krylon Clear Spray is an extremely easy process and will only take you a few minutes to complete. The first thing you need to do is make sure that the paint is completely dry before applying any sealant.

If you are sealing a painting that has been sitting for a while, you will want to get rid of any dust particles that might be on the surface. You can do this quickly with a damp paper towel and be extra careful to make sure there is no water dripping off the paper towel.

My favorite and top pick is always Arteza Acrylic Paints. They have so many different colors, and the quality is amazing! I usually use Arteza Paints for all my projects.

It will also be beneficial for you to read the instructions on the can before starting. The instructions will tell you important information such as what surfaces it will stick to, how much coverage you will get from the can, and the ideal conditions for use.

Krylon Clear Spray will adhere properly to metal, wood, paper mache, plastic, plaster, glass, and ceramic surfaces. From one can, you will be able to cover between fifteen and twenty square feet of surface. The conditions in which you use the spray can is essential for proper turn out.

Before you start, make sure you are in a well-ventilated area. The best place to use spray products is outside since there is plenty of fresh air. It is also likely that a breeze will keep the fumes from the can away from your face and out of your lungs.

The area also needs to be between 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure there is very little humidity when you are applying, because humidity can negatively impact the adhesion and drying process of the clear glaze.

Shake the can of glaze before you start using it. This will help all of the ingredients mix together properly before use. It’s recommended to shake the can for a minimum of 30 seconds before you start spraying it on the surface.

Before spraying the whole surface, test out the glaze on a part of the artwork that won’t be noticed. This is to make sure the glaze works with the surface and paint before applying it to the whole project and ruining it.

Hold the can of glaze between ten and twelve inches away from the surface and spray in a sweeping motion. Work from one side of the artwork to the other. This will ensure that you are getting the entire surface covered and not missing any spots or going over the same spots.

Apply the spray glaze in thin coats and let each dry properly before adding the next layer. It is recommended to use a minimum of two layers for the best protection of your painting, but you can add more if you wish. The dry time of the spray glaze will be listed right on the can.

If your painting is on a canvas, always make sure you spray the sides as well. When you add each new layer, spray in a different direction than you did on the previous layer. If you spray horizontally on one layer, spray vertically on the next. Alternate until you have as many coats as you want.

How Long Does It Take for Clear Glaze to Dry?

Clear Glaze tends to dry pretty quickly. It will typically be dry to the touch within fifteen minutes, which is the minimum amount of time that you should wait between coats on your painting. For the best results, it is recommended to wait about thirty minutes for one layer to dry before adding another.

The Clear Glaze will be completely and fully dry within four hours. This gives the coating plenty of time to dry before you try to hang it up. If you still aren’t sure that the Clear Glaze is dry, it won’t hurt to let it dry for longer before trying to hang it up.

The dry time of the Clear Glaze will be impacted by the environment you are painting in. If it is humid outside, you will notice that the Glaze is taking longer to dry than normal. For the best drying results, you should make sure it is going to be dry and warm when you are applying your varnish.

Final Thoughts

Krylon Crystal Glaze is a great sealer that can be used on a wide range of surfaces. It leaves your artwork with a smooth, glass-like finish that is quite literally crystal clear. With the range of surfaces that you can use this product, it is common to wonder if it is waterproof.

Although Krylon Clear Glaze is considered a permanent sealant, it isn’t waterproof when dry. It shouldn’t be used outdoors because it will quickly chip and peel away from the surface. However, it’s considered to be moisture resistant, so a little condensation won’t damage the artwork at all.
