Does Angelus Leather Paint Expire?

Angelus leather paints are an amazing product to work with. I have personally painted shoes, and other canvas surfaces with these paints, and the results were amazing. Angelus paints are great for customizing shoes, wood, decor, and much more. Every project adds a touch of creativity and uniqueness with these professional paints.

So, does Angelus leather paints expire? Angelus leather paints can last up to 3 years if properly stored at room temperature. If you opened the paint, then you have about 12 months until it expires, or goes bad. Typically paints will last longer if you take care of them, and store them correctly.

Since Angelus paints are acrylic based and not oil based, they will have a shorter lifespan than a typical oil paint tube. Oil paints can last up to 15 years if properly stored, while acrylic paints tend to have a shellfire of about 3-5 years. In this article we go over everything you need to know to make your Angelus paints last. Let’s read on!

What Is the Shelf Life of Angelus Leather Paint?

It is possible for Angelus paint to last up to 3 years if it’s unopened, and stored in proper conditions at room temperature. However, the typical shelf life is up to 12 months. Even if all of the correct storage instructions are followed, the first 12 months are when the paint will be at the highest quality.

This being said, no matter what the brand is, storing paint properly will undoubtedly extend its shelf life and ensure that it lasts for as long as possible.

If you do open the paint, and have leftover paint that you won’t be using for a while, it’s still possible for the remaining paint to have a good shelf life. This starts by making sure you have tightly sealed the lid back onto the paint, without leaving any gaps for air to get in, and unintentionally curing the paint.

The paint tin can be sealed with either a glue gun, multiple layers of cling-film, or by placing a block of wood over the lid and tapping it down with a hammer.

Extreme temperatures are one of the quickest ways to ruin your paint – this could be either too hot or too cold. Paint should be kept at a comfortable room temperature, at a minimum of 55 degrees Fahrenheit, and a maximum of 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

This means that ideally, paint should be stored somewhere inside the house rather than in a shed or a garage. It is also a good idea to frequently check up on the temperature of the room/cupboard to make sure it’s within these guidelines.

Does Angelus Paint Go Bad?

As with everything, Angelus paint will too go bad. This mostly happens if the paint has been opened and not sealed properly, or has been left in insufficient conditions such as too hot, too cold, or damp.

If the paint has not been opened, it is much less likely to go bad. But still, after a certain amount of time the quality of the paint will be compromised, and I would recommend buying a new batch.

If your paint has gone bad, it will be pretty easy to tell. Some of the main signs include; if the paint has dried out, if it has an unpleasant or odd smell that it didn’t have when purchased, if it’s clumpy or has chunks in it, or if it separates every time you try to stir it into a smooth mixture.

Once this has happened, there is really no going back and it’s best to dispose of it. It won’t provide the same high quality that it will have at the start, and as a result, not provide customer satisfaction either.

How Long Does Angelus Leather Paint Last?

If Angelus paint is well looked after, then there is no reason why it shouldn’t be permanent. On items that are subject to extra wear and tear like shoes or saddles, you might notice a decrease in quality over time. Nonetheless, this will take several years and extensive usage.

Angelus paint is designed to be one of the most durable leather paints on the market. The brand frequently advertises the strength and ability of the paint, stating that once it has fully cured it will not chip, peel, fade, or smear.

The brand also prides itself on the product’s longevity. Over the years Angelus has built itself up a glowing reputation for long-lasting quality and uniform finishes. The Angelus dye is the most permanent product on the company’s market and is often used on surfaces that are more difficult to adhere to. Angelus paint is designed purely for smooth leather materials, and the quality may differ if used on anything outside of this.

How Long Does It Take Angelus Leather Paint to Dry?

Once you have applied the final coat, the project should be left to dry for at least 24 hours. If the project is something that will be going outside, it is best to leave for up to 72 hours.

Between each coat, you should wait between 15 to 30 minutes for the previous layer to dry before applying the next. Depending on the item, you should apply 3-6 layers.

Please note that the quality of the paint strongly relies on the drying process. You should not use the item before the recommended drying time or expose it to the outdoors. The best place for Angelus paint to dry is in a dry, warm room.

How to Seal Angelus Leather Paint

Angelus leather paint is advertised as being durable without the need for a sealant, nonetheless, a large portion of customers still prefer to apply one to ensure a long lifespan. This is more useful if your project is going to be used for hardy activities, for example, shoes, jackets, or saddles.

After you have applied all of the necessary layers of paint and allowed them to fully dry and cure, you can easily apply a finisher using either a cloth or a paintbrush.

The Angelus Finisher is highly recommended to seal all your projects, and it dries pretty quickly too!

The paint should be sealed in bursts, rather than in heavy doses. So, if you’re using a paintbrush make sure the sealant layers are thin, or if you’re using a cloth, only cover the item in a light dusting at a time. Allow the finisher to dry before applying the next burst.

Final Thoughts

Even though Angelus paint is permanent once it has been applied to your project, it does have an expiration date whilst still in the can. The shelf life is of course longer if the product has never been opened in the first place, but it is still possible to make it last for a decent amount of time after it’s been opened with proper storage and sealing.

It is fairly easy to tell if your paint has gone bad – with general inconsistencies in the mixture or unusual smells. If your paint has gotten to this stage, it should be disposed of and replaced with a new version. The good news is, that once Angelus paint has been applied to your project, it will pretty much last forever even if you don’t use a finisher.
