Is Apple Barrel Paint Waterproof?

If you’re looking to paint something that might get wet, you’ll need to check that you’re using waterproof materials. However, acrylic paints aren’t waterproof, although they can be water-resistant. Adding a sealant after you finish painting can help improve the water-resistance of the color.

So, is Apple Barrel paint waterproof? Apple Barrel paints are acrylics, so they aren’t entirely waterproof. When dry, they have some water resistance but can still wash away with enough contact with water.

This article covers everything you’ll need to know about Apple Barrel paints and how you can make them more water-resistant. There’s more to learn, so let’s keep reading.

Does Apple Barrel Paint Come Off With Water?

Apple Barrel paint can come off with water quickly. It’s very washable paint, making it perfect for kids to use, but it won’t last as long if you put your projects in a place where they can get wet. If you don’t want your paint to come off with water, you’ll need to add a seal to the finished work.

While Apple Barrel paints can come off with water, they’re more likely to come off when you use soap too. Still, water can make the paint runny if you don’t wipe it up immediately. Different formulas can have various water resistances too.

For example, the Matte formula won’t last as long as the Original when it gets wet. The soft, matte texture makes it easier to wash away. At the same time, the Original is slightly glossy, giving it more protection when dry.

Overall, Apple Barrel paints can come off with water. While that makes them much easier to clean, they’re more at risk of water damage. However, that’s the case with most acrylic paints, so it’s something artists expect.

Does Apple Barrel Paint Wash Out of Clothes?

Apple Barrel paint is also straightforward to wash out of your clothes. Since it’s acrylic, you should be able to wash your clothes on a regular cycle in your washing machine to remove the paint stains.

Check out my other article that talks all about washing acrylic paint off in the washing machine.

If some paint doesn’t want to come out after the first wash, apply some isopropyl alcohol to the area. Let the alcohol sit on that spot for a few minutes under a cloth, then rewash the clothes. The paint should be completely gone this time.

Apple Barrel paints also come out of fabric easier if you don’t let the paint dry. Try to get the stain wet immediately so the color doesn’t get a chance to set into the material. From there, you can wash it as usual.

In short, removing Apple Barrel paint from clothing is pretty simple. It probably will on the second wash if it doesn’t come out the first time. Make sure you react quickly when you spill paint so it doesn’t get a chance to dry.

How Long Does Apple Barrel Paint Take To Cure?

Apple Barrel paint doesn’t take long to dry since it’s acrylic. However, if you combine it with the Apple Barrel Pouring Medium, you’ll need to wait much longer for it to cure. The medium changes the texture of the paints, so they’re easier to use for paint-pouring projects.

With the Pouring Medium, it now takes your paints about 24 hours to become dry on the surface and 48 hours for them to cure fully. If you move the paint before those 48 hours pass, you might smear it.

It also can take longer to cure if you live in a humid area. In that case, you’ll want to run a dehumidifier in the room with your painting to help it dry quicker.

You can expect the acrylic paint to dry in under an hour. However, combined with the pouring medium, it takes about two days to cure the entire way.

Is Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint Washable?

Apple Barrel paints are extremely washable! All you need is some soap and warm water to remove the color from nearly any surface. This feature makes them perfect for any project you have. Plus, you won’t have to worry about the consequences of spilling the paint.

If you want to use Apple Barrel products as durable fabric paint, you’ll need to combine them with a fabric medium. I highly recommend using Liquitex fabric Medium. Once you do, the paint will stick to the fabric’s surface better and shouldn’t wash off. Plus, the medium ensures the paint doesn’t crack or peel off. This method is for when you want to use paint to design a shirt or other piece of clothing.

It’s usually pretty easy to clean up Apple Barrel paints. Still, if you drip some on your carpet or clothing, you’ll want to act fast. The sooner you deal with the spill; the less likely the paints will stain your belongings.

So, most acrylic paints wash out of any material pretty easily. You shouldn’t have to worry about them staining. Although, if you want a long-lasting pigment that you can wash, adding a fabric medium to the paint is essential to prevent damage.

How Do I Seal Apple Barrel Paints?

Sealing the paints will make them more water-resistant. You can seal them by following these steps:

  1. Choose a high-quality waterproof varnish to seal your work with.
  2. Wait for the paint to dry completely.
  3. Apply a coat of sealant using a broad brush.
  4. Wait for that coat to dry, then add at least one more.
  5. Wait 24 hours (or more) for the seal to dry.

A reliable sealant can make your work weather-resistant, meaning it’s possible to display outside. However, you must choose an appropriate sealant for the job. My favorite sealer to use is Mod Podge. It works great and it comes in a glossy, matte and even glitter finish. Another top choice is Krylon, since they also protection against chipping and even UV rays!

Final Thoughts

To summarize, Apple Barrel paints are not waterproof, although they are somewhat water-resistant. Waterproof materials won’t take any damage from water. In contrast, water-resistant ones can handle small amounts of water before becoming damaged. There’s a difference, so you should always check!

Acrylic paints are washable before they dry, making them easy to clean when you react immediately. So, I recommend trying your best to deal with spills as soon as possible. Apple Barrel pigments almost always come out when you wet the stain right after it occurs.

Overall, Apple Barrel paints are not waterproof, but you can add a seal to your finished work to make them that way.
