So, can you bake chalk paint on glass? Yes you can! When you use chalk paint on a glass surface, it’s possible to bake it. When you put the chalk paint through the heat of the oven, it becomes permanent on the surface. This means you can put it in the dishwasher and not worry about the paint coming off.

Can You Bake Chalk Paint?
Yes, it’s possible to bake chalk paint. Baking makes the paint stick permanently to the surface, meaning you can use it and wash it frequently without worrying about ruining your beautiful design.
My favorite and top pick is always Rust-Oleum Chalk Paints. They have so many different colors, and the quality is amazing! I usually use Rust-Oleum Paints for all my projects.
First, you are going to want to let the chalk paint dry for a minimum of 24 hours, but the longer the better. This will ensure that the paint is dried through all layers. The next step is the most crucial step. Make sure you are putting the chalk painted surface, usually glass, into the oven before you turn it on. Do not place the glass in an already heated oven.
Close the oven door and set the temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Pay attention to the oven, because the baking time will start only when the oven reaches temperature. As soon as you see that the oven is at 350 degrees, start a timer for 30 minutes.
When the 30 minutes is up, turn the oven off. It is essential that you do not take the glass out as soon as you turn the oven off. You will want to let it cool gradually as the oven does to prevent a quick temperature change, resulting in a breakage.
When you are completely certain that the oven is cooled down, you can take the glass out. It is best to wait a minimum of 72 hours after baking to wash the surface of the chalk paint. You can put the object in the dishwasher safely, but you should handwash the surface the first few times.
How Do You Cure Chalk Paint on Glass?
The chalk paint will cure on its own after you apply it to the glass. It can take anywhere from 24 hours to four days to cure completely, so if you aren’t sure if it’s ready, you can wait a little longer before baking it.
It is important to make sure that the paint is cured before baking. If the chalk paint isn’t cured properly, it can heat up with the oven and melt. This is not ideal and can be very frustrating. After you give the chalk paint plenty of time to cure, you can bake it as instructed above.
Do You Need to Seal Chalk Paint on Glass?
If you aren’t planning on baking the glass, you will want to use a sealant. If you are going to bake the glass, then you will not need to use a sealant. The sealant works to make the paint become permanent on the surface, which is the same thing that baking the glass does.
I like to use this Jolie Chalk Paint Varnish for my chalk paint projects. It really protects your paint, and gives it a nice smooth finish.
In other words, you will need to seal the chalk paint onto the glass in one way or another. The most popular option is to bake the glass because it is easy and doesn’t require any extra materials. If you aren’t comfortable baking the glass, you can use a sealant instead.
How to Seal Chalk Paint on Glass
Sealing chalk paint on a glass without baking it is a pretty easy process. You have a few different options depending on how you are going to use the painted glass. You can use a chalk paint wax, an acrylic sealer, even Mod Podge.
If your painted glass is just going to be a display and will never be used, you can seal it with wax. It is not recommended to seal an object with wax that will be exposed to water frequently, so only use wax on glass items that you are positive will never need to be washed.
To use wax, paint the glass and wait for it to dry. You can use a wax brush or a lint-free cloth to apply the wax. It is best to work in a sweeping motion to ensure that you don’t miss any spots. You can work from the top to the bottom or from side to side to make sure you cover every piece of paint on the glass.
I recommend using Jolie Finishing Wax on your chalk paint. It’s odor free, and can be used on any surface!
For the paintbrush, it’s important to use a brush that goes with your product. Chalk paint and chalk paint wax use special natural bristle paintbrushes, like this set here. Using the wrong brush can lead to uneven layers and paint strokes.
If your glass is going to be used occasionally, you can use an acrylic sealer. These sealers will be fine when exposed to small amounts of water, so it can handle being washed now and then. You can use a brush-on or a spray sealant. You will want to make sure that the paint is dry before you apply the sealant.
When you use a spray sealant, you will want to be sure that you are in a well-ventilated area. Acrylic sealers are non-toxic, but they can still be irritating to your respiratory system. Spray thin, even layers over the surface of the glass and wait for it to dry. You can add more than one if you feel it needs more coverage.
With a brush-on sealant, you can use a brush to apply it. Keep the layers thin, starting from the top and working to the bottom or from side to side. This will ensure that you don’t miss any spots of paint. Let the sealant dry before you try to move the glass.
Finally, you can use Mod Podge to seal the chalk paint on your glass. This will be ideal if you plan on using the glass frequently and putting it in the dishwasher. There’s also a formula of Mod Podge that is designed to be dishwasher safe and will protect the chalk paint when you wash it.
Apply the Mod Podge in thin layers, allowing each to dry before adding the next. You should use at least two layers for maximum protection. When you are sealing a glass that you plan on using, always leave some space at the top to make sure the sealant doesn’t touch your mouth.
